AKC Standards

Please go to AKC website for full description of standards.

MIniature Schnauzers stand between 12 to 14 inches in height and weigh between 10 to 18 pounds. The coat is considered a double coat with a wirey outer coat and a softer under coat, which is why the coat is stripped of its under coat to give the schnauzer the rough wirey look and increasing the coats waterproofing. Clipping softens the coats and lightens the color. The miniature schnauzer coat does not shed if properly cared for. They are known for their outgoing temperment and intellegence. Their body is solid in build. Only three colors are recognized by AKC as standard color, Black, Black & Siver, and Salt & Pepper. All other colors are restricted from the show ring. The Miniature Schnauzer was bred down from the Standard Schnauzer to produce a smaller version with the Poodle and Affenpincher. By breeding down the breed other colors were interduced into the bloodlines. Even though the schnauzer is not one of the three standard colors, it is still considered pure breed and registerable through AKC.

Although AKC only recognize three standard colors in the show ring, the miniature schnauzer comes in  veriety of colors.  Below are picture of Miniature Schnauzer color and AKC registeration color code. (Merle color is not a pure bred schnauzer. Please be cautious when buying a merle color dog because they tend to have health issues. Also beware of Teacup schnauzers, some breeders have conserns they are not full bred or have health issues.)
